NAVAL ARCHITECT

The Naval Architect is responsible for providing expert technical support and engineering solutions for the repair, conversion, and maintenance of various types of vessels and also for the facility maintenance operations.

This role involves assessing vessel conditions, developing detailed docking, berthing and repair plans, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and collaborating closely with Projects, Production, Planning, Marine, Facilities and Quality Control teams and clients.

 

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct thorough surveys and inspections of vessels to identify damage, defects, and areas requiring repair or modification
• Perform structural analysis, stability calculations and weight estimates for repair and conversion projects
• Research and apply relevant maritime regulations, Classification Society rules and industry standards to all Production Engineering projects executed at the yard
• Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation using CAD software (2D and 3D) for repair, alteration, and conversion projects
• Prepare berthing plans, docking plans, block arrangements, and pumping plans for dry docking and undocking operations; provide technical input and develop heavy lift plans and calculations as required
to support shipyard operations
• Assist in the preparation of bid and proposal documents, including cost estimates and technical specifications
• Provide continuous engineering support to Production teams throughout the repair and conversion process, resolving technical issues and offering practical solutions; Act as technical liaison with Projects,
Production, Marine, Logistics, Facilities and QA/QC departments
• Participate in project meetings, provide technical presentations, and address client queries, technical support to development of facilities
• Identify potential risks and develop technical mitigation strategies for repair and conversion projects
• Responsible for review and checking of drawings produced by other Naval Architects and Draughtsmen prior to Production release and subsequent follow-through during Production phase and quality checks
• Assisting with the development / coaching of Marine Draughtsman I , II and Junior Naval Architect
• Support Senior Marine Draughtsman where necessary
• Adherence to all Company Policies and Procedures

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited university
• Minimum 5 years of experience as a Naval Architect, with significant experience specifically in a ship repair or new construction yard environment
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino, Ship Constructor, SOLIDWORKS); FEA experience is a plus
• Strong understanding of ship stability, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, structural mechanics, and materials science

• Familiarity with relevant international regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL, Load Line Convention), classification society rules, heavy lifting engineering, etc.
• Knowledge of ship construction methods and repair techniques
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong organizational and project management abilities
• Adaptability and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
• Occasional international travel may be required
• May involve working extended hours to meet project deadlines
• Collaborate effectively with other engineering disciplines (e.g., Marine Engineers, Electrical Engineers), project managers, production personnel, and clients
• Communicate complex technical information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in naval architecture, marine technology, and shipbuilding practices
• Contribute to the improvement of internal engineering processes and standards;
